A short history of Pangier

Part I
1835 to 1999

Pangier is located in the South Pacific Ocean just over 2000 Km south of the tropic of Capricorn, just under 3000 Km east from the antimeridian, is around 5000 Km north from the south pole and 5500 Km off the cost of Chile. Pangier is one of the most isolated countries on earth.

Pangier was almost entirely uninhabited by humans until around 1835 when it was officially discovered by accident on HMS Beagles voyage home. Pangier had been missed by Captain Cook on his second voyage of 1772-1775 whilst trying to find Terra Australis. Captain of the Beagle, Flag Lieutenant Robert FitzRoy and Charles Darwin found that by time they discovered Pangier it had now become inhabited by a small band of European and Pacific Islanders who had been ship wrecked or blown off-course. FitzRoy and Darwin were surprised to find that the inhabitants of Pangier had over some 30 years developed a sophisticated yet strange society.

Pangiers ethnic make up also held some surprises for the crew of the Beagle. Around 30% of the inhabitants came from England. Another 34% originated from northern Europe and another 18% came from Pacific Islanders. The finale 18% consisted of north and south Americans. In all Pangier had around 4000 inhabitants living as one peaceful community. Much of Pangier remained a wilderness with the inhabitants of Pangier staying close to ‘Safe-haven bay’ which was/is surrounded by good farming land and an excellent climate.

Darwin found Pangier and its inhabitants fascinating and noted how over just a short time the Pangiers had began to develop a new ‘pigeon’ linguists, a mixing of English, Dutch, French, German and Pacific, English seemed to be the main language that dominated. Darwin and FitzRoy also noted how the Pangieans seemed to have no visible form of religion. There had been no church at the small stronghold/town the Pangieans had built and there seemed to be no religious leaders. It was also observed that the Pangieans used the gorgonian calendar and seemed to still observe the Christian Sabbath on Sundays but instead of worship they played games and held large gatherings with lots of drinking and eating. One game in particular that interested many of the Beagles crew was a game called War, played on a large field with up to some 50 people per side the aim of the game was to get a ball from one end of the filed to the other using a range of complicated moves and tactics, a rough game with many a player leaving the filed with blooded nose.

In 1835 Pangier was still largely dominated by a male population, men making up some 64% but it was also observed; the Pangieans enlightened outlook towards impastation with women taking an equal roll in all things. Darwin also observed the number of female children was much higher than that of the boys and by 1870 the number of women outnumber the males by 2%.

1844, envoys of European Christian missionaries arrived on the shores of Pangier with the aim to reestablish a Christian faith. By this time the Pangieans had the use of firearms and had began small scale production of munitions. All of the envoys from Europe were shot. The white flag of the black shield is adopted as Pangiers national flag and 'The Sewing Division' is created to make use and repair sails and cloths as well as having the honor of making all of Pangiers flags.

1846, Europe send a small armed fleet to find out what happened to the envoys, that fleet never returns.

1849, Britain sends an armed fleet to capture Pangier but this armed forces is repelled by an organized Pangiern resistance and the fact that Pangier is so far from anywhere and has a highly defendable coastline. One British ship is wrecked and the survivors are rescued by the Pangieans. The Pangieans send a ship (‘The Light’, Pangiers first ocean going vessel) with the survivors that wish to return. This is the first time that any Pangieans have left Pangier, with the help of the British seamen, the Pangiern crew all second generation so as to avoid arrest for desertion, arrive in Plymouth in summer 1850, all of the Pangieans are taken prisoner by the British government

1852, the French send the battle ship Le Napoléon at the head of a fleet to capture Pangier. This fleet is also repelled with 5 0f the original 7 ships returning home. The Pangieans again return the French survivors back with a mixed crew of Pangiern second generation and French seamen in Pangiers second ocean going ship ‘The Dark’ arriving back at France in 1854. the French government also take the Pangiern crew prisoner

1860, both crews of the Pangiern ships are still in captivity but now Pangier has sent its third ocean going ship ‘The Hope’ to America carrying its first ambassador to the outside world with the aim of succoring Americas help in the release of its people. America agrees to help and is the first country to recognizes Pangier as an independent state.

1864, both Britain and France agree to return the remaining crew members of The Light and The Dark. Pangier builds ‘The Repatriation’ a ship who’s sole job is to return shipwreck survivors who wish to return home, it sails once a year to Wellington, New Zealand. The Repatriation also brings back items of interest and news from the outside world and is one of the main ways Pangier kept up to date with the rest of the worlds activist.

1867, both The Light and The Dark return home, after almost 17 years have pasted. The French released the crew and the ship The Dark first, they sailed to Britain where they were reunited with the crew of The Light. Funds had been sent via America from Pangier to help both crews prepare for the voyage home. It took around a year for both ships to be made ready and in that time some of the crews had taken wife’s and husbands as well as a few new crew members. They also bought back many new inventions, including photography ,electricity and Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species.

By 1870 Pangiers population had grown to around 50,000 and they had established an industlized society. They had their own form of government which would truly find its feet in 1900. by now Pangier had almost been fully explored and now new towns had sprung up. Pangier was/is rich in natural resources but with an enlightened approach these resources were/are guarded against destruction. Pangier remained an isolated country playing little part in any foreign affairs with its only real contact with the outside world being The Repatriations yearly trip to New Zealand.

1890, population grows to almost 100,000. in the last 20 years Pangier has fought off a number of aggressions, including a renewed attempt to bring Pangier under British rule and the French had another go as well but both were repelled. This prompted the formation of the Pangiern Black Guard and the Pangiern Volunteers. Pangier also instate the peoples militia requiring all Pangieans to attend weekly military training to defend the homeland from attack.

1900, Pangier declares its self the worlds first atheist state and this courses diplomatic relationships to brake down with the USA. Pangier prepare for attack when the USA send two cruisers to central America to protect its interests. The last of the first generation dies aged 94. Pangier declines an invitation to take part in the second modern Olympic games. This is the year the C.B.N.O. is created and becomes Pangiers governing system. The C.B.N.O begin its scientific quest of discovery and begin sending out its ‘information gathers’ or ‘spies’ to bring back to Pangier of what the world has to offer. second C.B.N.O. manifesto is published

1900-1914, Pangiers might grows under the new government system and a state of rapid growth begins. By 1914 Pangiers population has almost reached 200,000. The C.B.N.O. set up its first investigation in to eugenics

1904, Pangier close down all contact with the outside world for the whole year, all Pangieans return home in preparation for the first 4th of the 4th of the 4th, the most important day (a Monday this century) of the century for all Pangier

1914, The Great War begins and Pangier remains neutral and untouched by the troubles. Pangiern spies bring back many new technologies gathered from the chaos but they also bring back news of the horrors the world is inflicting on its people and environment.

1917, The Russian revolution, Pangier send spies to watch what happens and report back

1918-1936 after the great war and its effects on the environment the C.B.N.O. begin creating environmental production practices (epp’s) the population grows to around 600, 000.

1934, Pangiern delegation invited to Berlin, members of the C.B.N.O. visit Germany for six months but decline to join the Axis pact. Hitler is furious and the C.B.N.O. delegation return home.

1935, Charles Lindbergh makes a visit to Pangier, he stays for a month but finds the atheist state to much to bear and it was not long after his visit that he began to become more interested in religion. Pangiern 1st centenary

1937, Japan invades China, Pangier mobilize its army and navy. Pangier declare Stalin’s regime corrupted and denounce communism. C.B.N.O. army air wing formed. July 3rd Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan crash lands in the Pacific sea northwest of Pangier and are rescued, Noonan soon recovers but Earhart takes almost 4 months to recover from her injuries. Unexpectedly both Earhart and Noonan decide to remain in Pangier and keep it secret from the outside world a year later they have a baby girl.

1939, world war II begins, Pangier stays neutral but puts all of its resource in to defending the homeland. C.B.N.O. navy is deployed in defensive positions around Pangier. C.B.N.O. develops radar system

1941, C.B.N.O. radar system picks up unidentified navel fleet heading towards Pangier, spotter planes identify the fleet as a Japanese battle fleet. July 7th 1941, Pangier makes a preemptive strike on the Japanese fleet when they enter Pangiern territorial waters 200 Km off the coast of Pangier. The combined air and sea attack inflict major damage and the Japanese battle fleet has to with draw. This event is soon on the worlds news wires and its not long before the allied forces are making overtures to the C.B.N.O. government to enter the war on the allied side, the C.B.N.O. say they will put it to a vote. Two USA reporters from Life magazine allowed in to Pangier for the first time to do a piece on Pangiern society. This is the first time the outside world has seen such a detailed account of life in Pangier.

1942, Japan attacks pearl harbor and America enters the war. C.B.N.O. capture two German U-boats in Pangiern territorial waters this leads to The C.B.N.O. forming its own U-boat Fleet with the code name ‘Shark’. Pangier still declines to enter the war and declares “any nation entering our territorial waters is given warning”

1943, C.B.N.O. Shark sinks Japanese destroyer in an unprovoked attack some where in the south pacific. C.B.N.O. long range spotter plane shot down by Japanese navy over Solomon islands, pilot ‘Luttan Flick’ captured and executed. Pangier declares war on Japan. Rescued American service men introduce Football and baseball to the Pangieans rescued British bring Cricket and soccer.

1944, C.B.N.O. Sharks sink 10 more Japanese war ships and around 400,000 tones of merchant shipping. Japan destroy 4 Sharks with all hands either lost at sea or executed. The C.B.N.O. sewing division celebrate 100 years

1945, war ends in Europe, Japan is on the retreat, C.B.N.O. plays no more part in the war. USA ends the war by dropping atomic bomb on Japan. C.B.N.O. condones USA for use of atomics and declares to the world “we will not take part in this atomic madness”. Pangier Closes its doors on the outside world and refuses to take part in any diplomatic talks with any nation accept New Zealand, which the C.B.N.O. keep a thread to the rest of the world with. Pangier begin the long term project of moving all of its industries underground to protect it from atomic attack. C.B.N.O. spies return to Pangier with plans of ‘The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe’. Pangier return all foreign nationals taken captive or rescued during the campaign in the Pacific, a few ask to stay. Pangier sets up the PFL (Pangiern Football League)

1946-1956, The C.B.N.O. instates its recycling laws, religion is made a criminal offence and the birth rate is curtailed when the Pangiern population reaches 1,000,000 in 1956. C.B.N.O. begin production of its own AK47 assault rifle after C.B.N.O. spies bring back examples from the communist states. The C.B.N.O. also manufacture their own versions of; the British Sterling SMG, the German MP40, MP44 and the MG42. C.B.N.O. begin to develop tele-broadcasting and the institute for space exploration is founded. C.B.N.O. condemn the Partition of India.

1957, C.B.N.O. state broadcasting system goes live, all Pangieans begin receiving state supposed tele-sets

1958, Sputnik is launched by the soviets. USA launches the satellite Explorer 1. Pangier keeps a close eye on the British expeditions first crossing of the Antarctic in Snow-cat caterpillar tractors and dogsled teams, “we were there first” declare the C.B.N.O. Pangier condemns USSR for atomic test at Novaya Zemlya. C.B.N.O. keep close eye on The 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition that becomes the first ever to reach the Southern Pole of Inaccessibility.

1959, Pangier condones China and USA involvement in Vietnam. C.B.N.O. opens its first winter sports center on Mt Purposes, with skiing, Bobsleigh.

1960, C.B.N.O. condemns France for testing its first atomic bomb in the Sahara. CND invites a delegation of C.B.N.O. members to attend anti-nuclear rallies in UK and Europe, four members are sent but are refused entry in to the UK and return home. C.B.N.O. discover vast gold reserve at the Pangiern interior. C.B.N.O. scientist turn their attention to solar power. C.B.N.O. bring in new building regulations to make all new structures conform to strict environmental laws.

1961, slow on the up-take the C.B.N.O. begin work on a new computer system with help from information gathered by their spies. The Soviet Union detonates a 58-megaton yield hydrogen bomb known as Tsar Bomba over Novaya Zemlya. It remains the largest ever man-made, the C.B.N.O. are appalled.

1962, two C.B.N.O. spies are captured by the USA government and put on trial but the trial collapse and the per are deported back to Pangier. The C.B.N.O. secretly listen in as Telstar relays the first live trans-Atlantic television signal. Pangier declares the Cuba missile crisis insanity.

1963, John F. Kennedy assassination In Dallas, Texas. Pangier launches first satellite in to space called ‘orbit 1’

1964, C.B.N.O. instate the four rules and reorganizes the government in to four senates. Work begins on the new senate buildings complex. C.B.N.O. fatale security capture four Russian spies trying to enter Pangier, they are help prisoner until the Repatriation II can take them to New Zealand. While the four are held for two months The C.B.N.O. refuse to responded to the USSR. A British photo journalist ‘Silva Carr’ from the Guardian is allowed to enter Pangier, she stays for six months and is immediately surprised that marijuana is openly smoked by many adults and soon learns that it is a government approved drug. She goes on to win awards for her photo-exposé. Two years later she returns wishing to gain Pangiern citizenship, she is accepted as a new member and takes up residents in the Pangiern capital and begins work on a 4 year project to photograph the lives of Pangier. Third C.B.N.O. manifesto published

1965, USA spy ‘Bert Langstone’ uncovered working on the construction of the new senate complex but when he’s put on trial he declares that he has been active for 5 years and now wants to stay in Pangier having been ‘converted’ to the Pangiern way of life. The USA demanded the return of their man, Langstone pleads with the C.B.N.O. government not to be sent back. In the end the C.B.N.O. decide to let him stay but on a strict probation. Friends Langstone has made over the last five years agree to act as his guardians.

1966, C.B.N.O. condemn Australia for its involvement in the Vietnam. C.B.N.O. launch ‘Orbit 2’

1967, Pangieans tune in to watch the first Super bowl, this is made possible by Pangiers new satellite ‘Orbit 3’ which can pick up TV transmissions from any part of the world and broadcast them back to the homeland, this advanced technology is kept highly secret from the outside world. That same year 400 million viewers watch Our World, the first live, international, satellite television production. It features the live debut of The Beatles' song "All You Need is Love." C.B.N.O. suspect a leek in their internal security. Pangier, The United States, Soviet Union and United Kingdom sign the Outer Space Treaty. Pangier sends aid to Venezuela after An earthquake in Caracas, leaves 240 dead. A number of Pangieans illegally enter UK and USA to take part in the summer of love, this group will later go on to form the C.B.N.O. Peace Brigade.

1968, Pangier send first 4 members to compete in The 1968 Winter Olympics held in Grenoble, France. They return as heroes with one gold medal in the four man bob. C.B.N.O. instate the obesity law. ‘The Jefferson Airplane’ are invited to play 4 gigs in the Pangiern Capital, the band return to the USA freaked out by their trip and are mobbed by the press wanting to know what it was like.

1969, C.B.N.O. invite more music groups to play in the Pangiern capitol, this time from the UK, including; Led Zeppelin, Edger Broughton Band and Pink Floyd. Again on the bands return the worlds press are waiting, Led Zeppelin say they’re never going back. C.B.N.O. launch ‘Orbit 4’. C.B.N.O. navy salute Robin Knox-Johnston when he passes close to Pangiers northern coast becoming the first person to sail around the world solo without stopping. All eyes are on the Apollo 11 manned mission to the Moon. The Peace Brigade do Woodstock they return home after that with Jimi Hendrix, The Incredible String Band, Janis Joplin, Can and The Who among others to play a 4 day festival in the Pangiern capitol. C.B.N.O. appalled the SALT I negotiations. Aphrodite’s Child play 4 nights in Pangiern capitol.

1970, Mick Jagger makes a secret visit with the rolling stones after he is fined £200 for possession of cannabis. The band stay for a month having jam sessions with Pangiern musicians and record an album that is never heard by the outside world. Pangier sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which goes into effect, after ratification by 44 nations. The 1970 Ancash earthquake causes a landslide that buries the town of Yungay, Peru; more than 47,000 people are killed, Pangier send aid. The Doors play 4 nights in Pangier capitol.

1971, the C.B.N.O. condemn The Convention on Psychotropic Substances in Vienna. C.B.N.O. become suspicious of Chile and East Germany establishing diplomatic relations. Pangier and New Zealand strengthen ties with a state visit to Pangier by New Zealand Prime Minister Keith Holyoake, when New Zealand withdraw from Vietnam, the world is watching. This leads to the first foreign embassy, New Zealand, being set up in the Pangiern capitol. The UK begin talks with New Zealand to see if they can establish diplomatic ties with Pangier.

1972, Pangier and Japan reconcile their differences from WWII. The 1972 Winter Olympics are held in Sapporo, Japan, C.B.N.O. send 10 members to compete. One gold (bob) and one bronze (downhill skiing) the team return triumphant. C.B.N.O. launch first manned fight to orbit earth called ‘Beagle 1’ in honor of HMS Beagles visit in 1835. the craft is piloted by Commander ‘Justine Earhart’. She spends two days orbiting earth before splashing down 1000 Km east of Pangier and recovered by the C.B.N.O. navy. She is the first Pangiern to be given the honor of a national parade through the capitol and made a hero of the state. The C.B.N.O. gives its backing to The Club of Rome published report Limits to Growth. Pangier, The U.S. and the Soviet Union join some 71 nations in signing the Biological Weapons Convention, an agreement to ban biological warfare. Pangier offer safe haven to all Greenpeace vessels. Summer Olympics in Munich, Pangier don’t attend, Munich Massacre: 11 dead

1973, Pangier congratulates U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War ending with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. Pangier threaten military action on French after they resumes nuclear bomb tests in Mururoa Atoll, Australia and New Zealand also make protests, C.B.N.O. send spies to France. Pangier protest the military coup it Chile, General Augusto Pinochet heads a U.S.-backed military junta that governs Chile. C.B.N.O. close it boarders and begin intensive military build up. France sends ‘le Clem’ aircraft carrier and two cruisers to protect their interests. USA warn Pangier off Chile, Chile declares Pangier a hostile territory.

1974, Pangier demands India halt all nuclear bomb testing. Nixon resigns, Ford takes over and clears Nixon of all crimes. Things remain very tents between Pangier and the USA, France and Chile.

1975, Pangier launch ‘Beagle II’ a two man mission to orbit the moon

1976, The 1976 Winter Olympics open in Innsbruck, Austria, Pangier send a team of 15.

1977, A nuclear non-proliferation pact is signed by 15 countries, including the United States and the Soviet Union, Pangier denounce the whole thing as a farce. USA, USSR, France, China, Pakistan, India and the UK are all put on the C.B.N.O. nuclear threat list.

1978, Pangier sets up its first computer network

1979, Pangier switch all energy surplice to solar, wind, sea and thermal, and almost remove the need for oil. Pangiers oil reserves are now exclusively used for lubrication and bio-plastics. UK, USSR, USA, France, China, Pakistan, India and Chile declare Pangier and the C.B.N.O. an enemy state and seek to get the UN to do the same.

1980, Pangier fear invasion as The USA, France and UK conduct navy war games in the south pacific sea. China begin navel maneuvers in the Pacific. Soviet nuclear sub K-59 is captured in Pangiern territorial waters and taken in to custody, The USSR demand the immediate release of its crew and sub but the C.B.N.O. ERT unit dismantle the sub and send all its nuclear components in to space aimed at the sun. the crew are integrated by the FSB and then sent back. The USSR is outraged and send a fleet to the pacific. Chile sink one of the C.B.N.O. navy long range scout ships, from the crew of 24, 18 are lost at sea the rest are taken in to captivity, tortured and executed by the Chilean government.

Pangier declare war on Chile. September 19th Battle ship PS Might and PS Power and the aircraft carrier PS Ganit head for Chile, when in range, launch an air raid on military targets in Valparaiso on September 26th. Chile is caught off guard and by time its ready to launch a counter attack the PS Ganit’s planes have returned and refueled ready to face Chilean fighter planes. The C.B.N.O. fleet with draw out of Chilean airspace leaving Chilean ships open to attack from the air. Seven C.B.N.O. planes are shoot down five of the pilots are lost two more are recovered by PS Might. The world is stunned, the UN call an immediate end to hostilities and the USA send a fleet to intercept the three Pangiern ships on their return home. The USA try to blockade the three ships but they brake through and return home. The USA, USSR, Chile, France and the UK try to blockade Pangier with its navy’s and economic restrictions but this has no effect as Pangier is completely self-sufficient, a stalemate begins.

1981, New Zealand becomes the go-between in the escalating troubles and try to find a diplomatic solution. The USA threaten to invade after The C.B.N.O. attack on Chile. February 1st Chilean navy begin bombarding Pangiers eastern coast line but come under heavy fire from C.B.N.O. navy and air force, Chilean frigate is sunk 157 Chilean navy crew taken prisoner. Feb 4th C.B.N.O. shot down Russian TU-142 and take the crew captive. UN call emergency meeting fearing a Russian full-scale attack on Pangier. UN ask Pangier to send a representative. March 10th first ever C.B.N.O. representative, ‘Captain Helena Van Kline’ to the UN arrives at the General Assembly in New York wearing Black Guard uniform causing uproar in the assembly. Dubbed ‘The Prophet of Doom’ by the worlds press Van Kline address the General Assembly condemning the world of slumbering blindly in to nuclear oblivion, she accuses all the world’s religions of hypocrisy and that the blood on their hands is as red as the blood spilt by the Axis and Allied armies of world war II. She end’s her statement with a warning “only death awaits you on our shores”.

Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet is sworn in as President of Chile for another 8-year term. Three days later March 14th Chile attempt operation ‘Thunder Hammer’ a seaborne invasion of Pangier on the eastern coast, around 90’000 Chilean troops begin their attack at 9 am in the morning by 11 am more than one quarter have either been killed or injured when they come under massive bombardment from land, sea and air, The C.B.N.O. have trained for this moment for almost 50 years now and their defensive plans prove highly effective. By the end of the day almost half of all Chilean troops have been killed, injured or captured and the Chileans are forced to with draw, leaving almost 7,000 men stranded on the beachhead, they try to hold out but by the next day all have surrendered, this action becomes known as ‘the battle of Solder beach’. The C.B.N.O. think this attack is really just a diversion and remain ready for more attacks.

The shock waves vibrate around the world, New Zealand, Australia and a number of smaller Pacific nations brake diplomatic relations with Chile and come out in support of Pangier. The C.B.N.O. release film of Chiles failed attack to the worlds press and it’s the first time that the world has seen C.B.N.O. troops in action. Pangier agree to allow 4 members of the foreign press in to cover the crisis from inside Pangier, 1 from USA, 1 from The UK and two from New Zealand. Pangier fears that either the USA of USSR will use nuclear weapons owing to Pangiers isolated location on the globe. Fearing the same thing large peace protests begin in London, Paris, Washington, Berlin and across the rest of the world, these protests are more in fear of nuclear war rather than support for Pangier. Chile with draw from the fight and demand the return of all their captured troops. The C.B.N.O. accuses The USA of involvement in the failed operation Thunder Hammer stating that Chile could never stage such a large military operation with out the help of other nations. Monzer al-Kassar is arrested trying to enter Pangier in an attempt to sell them arms, The FSB take him prisoner, he’s never seen again. The stalemate sets back in with only a few miner skirmishes.

1982, Argentines land on South Georgia Island, precipitating war, The UK withdraw from the Pangiern conflict having not fired one shot to deal with the Falkland’s. C.B.N.O. send all enemy combat’s to New Zealand to be repatriated. The day after June 23rd Russian sub K-112 fires nuclear war head at Pangier, an unexplained event happens, the warhead turns off whilst in the air and crash-lands in the sea 100 Km north of Pangier, its recovered by the C.B.N.O. navy. The ERT unit remove all radioactive parts and fire them in to space at the sun, they then display the weapon to the worlds press. Helena Van Kline accuses Russia of attempted genocide the leaves the General Assembly saying to the waiting press as she leaves “we will not be back” she returns home to Pangier. C.B.N.O. implicated in the death of "God's Banker", Roberto Calvi, chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, who is found hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge in London. Solidarity sends its support to Pangier after the Russian attack. July 2nd Russian sub K-112 fires another nuclear war head at Pangiern capitol, this warhead also shuts down in midflight and crash-lands on Pangiern soil. The UN, USA, UK and many other countries condemn Russia of irresponsible action, the ERT unit deal with the clean up. The C.B.N.O. sub-hunter ‘PS Spear’ detects the Russian sub K-112 in the south pacific and attack. K-112 is damage and forced to the surface. C.B.N.O. navy takes K-112 captive, two Russians die in the action.
